Church Weddings in Malta
The predominant faith in Malta is Roman Catholicism, and there are Roman Catholic churches throughout Malta. Anglican Churches are relatively easily found also.
Marriages in Roman Catholic and Anglican churches in Malta are registered by the state and therefore have full legal status. It is not necessary to have a civil ceremony in addition to the religious one.
While it is possible to find hold weddings in other faiths in Malta, and there are a number of churches or various religions available, these weddings will have no legal status and must be preceded by a civil ceremony.
Roman Catholic Weddings
To get married in a Roman Catholic church in Malta you must comply with all of the requirements for a civil ceremony, however when you make application to the Registrar you must also include the following information:
- The name and location of the church where your wedding will take place
- A confirmed date for your wedding
- The name of the celebrant
Since application to the registrar needs to be made between 6 and 12 weeks before the wedding, you need to begin making arrangements for the religious ceremony well in advance of that.
The church paperwork takes some time to complete, so realistically you need to start at least 6 months prior to the wedding.

The streetscape of just about every Maltese town and village is dominated by a beautiful church. However it is not easy to find contact details for Catholic churches in Malta online, in English at least. Anglican Weddings in Malta
An Anglican wedding in Malta will be legally registered in Malta and so recognised internationally, thus no separate civil ceremony is required. However all the requirements for a civil marriage must be met, in addition to those of the church.
You will need to contact the clergy at the church where you plan to get married well before the proposed date of your wedding, both to ascertain that he will consent to your marriage in his church and to enquire about available dates.
In general you will get permission to marry in an Anglican Church provided one of the parties to the marriage is a baptised member of the Anglican Communion. A Baptismal certificate for at least one of you will be required. You will be required to have a meeting with the chaplain prior to your wedding - this usually takes place within a couple of days of the ceremony.
