An Overview of Malta

Malta is an archipelago in the Southern Mediterranean, with the largest three islands Malta, Gozo, and and Comino inhabited.

A low rocky country, with no mountains or rivers, Malta has a particularly beautiful coastline, with many cliffs and numerous harbours and beaches.

While the population may seem small, the country is even smaller, just 124 sq km, so there is a high population density.

Climate

Malta has a typical Mediterranean climate with mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers.

In spring and autumn the 'Xlokk', or Sirocco, hot winds blowing in from Africa can lead to extremely high temperatures and humidity.

Religion

The majority of the Maltese people belong to the Roman Catholic religion and religious observance is high. The position and authority of the church is enshrined in Malta's constitution.
