Specific Requirements by Foreign Countries for Marriage

Every country will have specific requirements for non-citizens intending to marry. There are covered in detail in the pages in this section of the site and in country-specific terms in our destination guides. However there are a few potential issues you should be aware of and satisfy yourself about before you travel abroad to get married.

The following are easily overlooked but important things you need to check no matter what country you are considering. They are issues that can and have caused problems, even for those who have paid close attention to following their chosen country's legal requirements.

  1. Period of Passport
Many countries require a 10 year passport with at least 6 months to run.
  2. Validation of Documents
Some countries require that documents be notarised, that is that a third party - usually an attorney or solicitor - attaches a legal declaration to them stating that they are valid.
  3. Return Air Ticket
Some countries require that you show a return air ticket before you will be married.
  4. Medical Certificates
In some places couples must have a medical examination and some blood tests before they can marry.
  5. Marriage after divorce
Some countries have specific regulations about how much time must have elapsed after a divorce before a person can marry again. A few require a negative pregnancy test if the divorce took place less than 9/10 months ago.
