If you are organising your own wedding, you will need to make contact with the registrar in the area where you plan to marry well before the date. While theoretically a licence can be issued within days, in practice there is a lot of paperwork to complete and the regulations can differ in detail from one place to another.
Be aware that in almost all cases correspondence with registry offices must be in Italian, and you are also unlikely to encounter an English speaking person on the phone.
