Church Weddings in Cyprus

The predominant faith in Cyprus is the Church of Cyprus, an Orthodox Church. However it is possible to get married in churches of a number of other religions and denominations, though it will mean seeking out the few churches available.

Marriages which take place in churches or synagogues have NO legal status in Cyprus. For your marriage to be legal you will have to have a separate civil ceremony, either in Cyprus or before you travel. You must already be legally married before the religious ceremony takes place.

To get married in a Roman Catholic church in Cyprus you must already have been married in a civil ceremony. This can have taken place before you travel, in Cyprus on a prior date or can take place earlier on the same day as the church wedding.

If you are having your civil ceremony in Cyprus, all the requirements for that apply for civil weddings must be met, in addition to those which specifically relate to the religious ceremony.

Getting Started

You will need to contact the parish priest at the church in Cyprus where you plan to get married well before you start making arrangements at home, both to ascertain that he will consent to your marriage in his church and to enquire about available dates.

You should contact your local priest at least 6 months before the date of your wedding in order to allow adequate time to meet all requirements and for completion of all church paperwork.

Anglican Weddings in Cyprus

To get have a marriage which takes place in an Anglican Church in Cyprus legally recognised in your home country you must also be married in a civil ceremony.

This can take place before you leave home, in Cyprus on a prior date or can take place earlier on the same day as the church wedding.

Getting Started

You will need to contact the clergy at the church where you plan to get married well before the proposed date of your wedding, both to ascertain that he will consent to your marriage in his church and to enquire about available dates.

In general you will get permission to marry in an Anglican Church provided one of the parties to the marriage is a baptised member of the Anglican Communion. A Baptismal certificate for at least one of you will be required.

You will be required to have a meeting with the chaplain prior to your wedding - this usually takes place within a couple of days of the ceremony.

Jewish Weddings in Cyprus

The first and only synagogue in Cyprus opened its doors in Larnaca in September 2005, catering to the island's small Jewish community of around 1500 people.
