Croatian Cuisine
Croatian food is very good indeed, and although based on peasant dishes, modern interpretations are found in restaurants in all the towns and cities. The dishes served vary quite widely depending on the region.
Along the coast the food is very similar to Italian food, with fresh fish a ubiquitous ingredient. Wherever you go you will find Strukli, little pasta parcels, somewhat like ravioli, filled with cheese and served sprinkled with fried breadcrumbs.
Other dishes to look out for include the popular traditional
Croatian fish soups, brodetto andgregada, the latter a kind of bouillabaisse. You will also find lots of Goat's cheese, olives and dried ham used in this region - very close to Italian style.
In the North of the country the Austrian and German influence predominates, with stuffed cabbage, sausage, peppers, dumplings and rich pastries to the fore. A delicious dish served widely is visovacka begavica, lamb cooked in sheep's milk.
Wine & Beer
Coastal regions have many vineyards, though it must be said that their output is very variable, from the totally delicious to the barely drinkable. Look out for the varietals frankovka and dingac which tend to be better than average.
